ABSTRACT

Familial Adenomatous Polyposis is characterized with multitudinous (>100) premalign colorectal adenomatous polyps and tumor develops as a result of mutations in suppressor adenomatous polyposis coli gene. Our objective in this study is to analyze patients whom we operated for Familial Adenomatous Polyposis.

Characteristics of 24 patients operated for Familial Adenomatous Polyposis in our clinic between 2002-2012 ane recorded retrospectively.

According to colonoscopy results and clinical findings 21 of the patients are diagnosed as Familial Adenomatous Polyposis while 3 patients diagnosed as Attenuated Familial Adenomatous Polyposis. Proctocolectomi+ ileal posch anal anastomosis has been applied to 17 of patients, while 7 patients has undergone total colectomy+ ileo-rectal anastomosis. Pathology of the main specimen was reported as adeno CA in 15 patierts, and as benign in 9 patients. According to age pattern (ranges) (20-30, 31-40, 41-50, >50 ages), malignity ratios are determined as 50%, 40%, 50%, 88.9%, respectively.

Patients with familial adenomatous polyposis and their families should be recorded regularly and kept in close observation, and periodic colonoscopies should be applied. With the help of this, early diagnosis and suitable prophylactic surgery will decrease the development of colorectal cancer especially in young persons with high risk.
