ABSTRACT
OBJECTIVE:
The use of transrectal ultrasonography (TRUS) at anorectal disorders is on the increase. TRUS is being used at diagnosis of benign neoplasms, postoperative evaluation, pre and posttreatment evaluation of malignancies with an increasing frequency. The aim of the study was to evaluate our TRUS results.
METHODS:
TRUS (B-K Medical Profocus 2050 Danimarka) (10,13,16 Mhz) was performed to 269 patients (176 male, 93 female) after anamnesis, physical examination and endoscopic investigation at our clinic between June 2006- December 2008.
RESULTS:
Patients divided into 6 groups; tumor (n=42), abscess (n=53), fistula (n=61), postoperative evaluation (n=57), anal incontinance (n=52) and constipation (n=4).
CONCLUSION:
We think that TRUS must be considered as one of the initial examination procedure at malign and benign anal neoplasms and it will be quickly adopted by surgeons who are closely interested in anorectal anatomy after a short learning period, because TRUS is an easily feasible, simply acceptable and cost effective technique, it requires simple preperation and gives fast and accurate information about anatomy before surgery.
