ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION:

This randomized-controlled study was performed in order to investigate the effect of the patient education given preoperatively to patients who would undergo pilonidal sinus (PS) surgery on patient satisfaction and quality of life (QOL).

METHODS:

The study population consisted of 62 patients who underwent surgery due to PS between November 2010 and April 2012.Patients were divided into two groups of 31 patients as intervention and control groups through block randomization sample selection. Before the education SF-36 QOL scale were applied to patients in the intervention group. Patients in the control group before surgery was performed the same scale. Patients, who underwent the surgery, were applied the Newcastle Satisfaction Nursing Scales (NSNS) before discharged from the hospital and the SF-36 QOL scale at the postoperative fourth week.Analysis of the data obtained from the study in SPSS 16.0 was evaluated by descriptive statistics, t test, and Mixed ANOVA.

RESULTS:

The mean age of patients in the intervention group was 23.02±2.51 years and the mean of body mass index was 25.97±2.39 kg/m2.Patients in the intervention group scored above average in all of the subdimensions of SF-36 QOL scale postoperatively. The intervention group received from the NSNS were higher than patients in the control group.

DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION:

As a result of this study, it has been understood that preoperative education given to patients has a positive effect on patient satisfaction and QOL. Based on the information obtained from the study, establishing more comprehensive preoperative patient education protocols and new researches with larger samples on patient education and results are recommended.
