ABSTRACT

The synchronous occurence of gastric and rectum cancer is rarely observed in medical practice. The aim of this report was to present a patient with synchronous gastric and rectum cancer treated in our clinic and to discuss the prognosis and clinicopathologic features of synchronous primary gastric and colorectal cancer with the relevant literature. In this study, we present a rare case of a 59-year-old male patient with the synchronous occurence of gastric and rectum cancer. The patient underwent radical subtotal gastrectomy with D2 lymph node dissection and Billroth II gastrojejunostomy for gastric cancer and low anterior resection for rectal cancer. The patient was died 15 months after operation. In conclusion, the possibility of synchronous cancers in the patients with gastrointestinal cancer should be considered. Particularly, careful surveillance for synchronous cancer is warranted for the patients with gastric cancer. We concluded that early diagnosis, multimodality treatment methods and close follow up make a significant contribution to the management and prognosis.
