ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE:

The technique of stapled hemorrhoidectomy modified in 1998 by Longo; not only resect all around the rectal mucosa and submucosa to make anastomose but also come out the prolapsed anorectal mucosa at the level of dentat line. The aim of our study was to compare length of surgery, length of hospital stay, cost analysis and postoperative pain between circular stapling devices and conventional excisional techniques.

METHODS:

In this study we evaluated 31 patients who underwent circular stapled hemorrhoidectomy by the technique of Longo - Milito and 50 patient who underwent conventional hemoroidectomy at the Ankara university department of surgery. We compared VAS, lenght of hospital stay, cost analysis and operation time.

RESULTS:

For the patients who underwent stapled hemorrhoidectomy, total cost was found 1625 ytl, mean operation period was found 32 min, mean period of stay of hospital was found 3.1 day, at 6th hour VAS value was found 4.1. For the patients who underwent conventional hemorrhoidectomy total cost was found 817 YTL, mean operation period 48 min, mean period of stay of hospital 3.9 days, and VAS value 4.7.

CONCLUSION:

Stapled hemorrhoidectomy is costly, more practical than conventional hemorrhoidectomy, and this procedure takes shorter time. Altough the length of hospital stay and post-operative at sixth hour VAS value is shorter than the conventional hemorrhoidectomy there is no statistical difference between them.
