Approach of Turkish General Surgeons About Mechanical Bowel Preparation Before Elective Colorectal Surgery

Objevtive:

Although it is shown that there’s no need for mechanical bowel preparation before colorectal surgery, many surgeons stil prefer to apply it routinely worldwide. In this article, we aim to investigate approaches of Turkish general surgeons about mechanical bowel preparation before elective colorectal surgery.

Methods:

We prepared e questionnare including 14 questions for investigating that is answered by general surgeons through web.

Results:

123 general surgeon participated to the questionnaire. Mechanical bowel preparation ratios are as follows respectively, before right side bowel operations 66.1%, before left side bowel operations 81.3%, before rectal surgeries 85.4%. Among the surgeons prefering preparation. 71.5% use both oral solutions and enama. 60.3% of surgeons stated that patients can tolerate the procedure. 43.3% of surgeons think that total cost is not changed after mechanical bowel preparation, 28.5% think it increased, 27.6% think it is decreased.

Conclusion:

Mechanical bowel preparation ratios before elective colorectal surgery seem to be higher in Turkey.
